Fall Maintenance Checklist: Get Your Home Ready for Cooler Weather

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, it’s the perfect time to get your home ready for fall and the cooler months ahead. A little seasonal maintenance now can prevent bigger problems later, keep your home safe, and help your community look its best.

Single Family Homes

For single-family homes, the exterior can benefit from some seasonal attention. Consider cleaning out gutters, removing debris, and checking your roof for any damaged shingles or flashing. Rake leaves, mulch garden beds, and trim trees and shrubs to keep your yard healthy. Walkways and driveways can be inspected for cracks or hazards, and outdoor faucets and irrigation systems can be winterized. Check exterior lighting, decks, patios, and porches, and make sure fences, gates, and other outdoor structures are secure. Store or cover outdoor furniture and equipment that could be affected by cold weather.

Maintenance for All Homes

For the interior of single-family homes and condominium units, fall is an ideal time to focus on heating, plumbing, and safety. Test your heating system and replace air filters to keep HVAC systems running efficiently. Check windows and doors for drafts and seal any gaps with weatherstripping. Inspect plumbing for leaks and be familiar with the location of shut-off valves. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed. Check appliances such as water heaters for proper operation, inspect caulking and grout in bathrooms and kitchens, and consider adding heavier curtains or draft guards to help retain heat. Finally, review emergency supplies and flashlights to ensure preparedness for anything winter might bring.

Please note that this checklist is meant as a suggested guide. It is not all-inclusive, and every home or unit may have additional maintenance needs based on its unique features or systems.

By taking care of the exterior for single-family homes and focusing on interior tasks for all homes, homeowners can protect their investment, prevent costly repairs, and enjoy a safer, more comfortable home all season long. A little preparation now goes a long way toward a cozy and worry-free winter.
